Frameless

Frameless London is an immersive artistic experience featuring masterpieces by Van Gogh, Monet and Dalí. Tickets, opening times and practical information for your visit.

Just a stone’s throw from Oxford Street sits Frameless, the United Kingdom’s largest permanent immersive art experience. Located at Marble Arch, this cutting-edge venue has revolutionised the traditional way we experience art, transforming a museum visit into a multisensory journey that engages sight, sound and movement.

Using advanced projection technology and motion sensors, Frameless showcases 42 masterpieces by 29 legendary artists, from Monet to Van Gogh, from Dalí to Klimt, in a format that allows visitors to literally step inside the artworks. Every brushstroke, every shade of colour comes alive on the walls surrounding you, accompanied by soundtracks composed specifically for each masterpiece.

The experience unfolds across four distinctive themed galleries, each dedicated to a different artistic movement and equipped with specific projection technologies. Unlike the temporary Van Gogh exhibitions that have visited London in recent years, Frameless is a permanent installation that offers an ever-evolving programme, with special events, adult evening sessions and creative workshops.

This is no ordinary digital art exhibition: it’s an experience that redefines the relationship between viewer and artwork, where every visitor becomes an integral part of the art installation, influencing the visual and sonic perception of the space with their own movements.

Things to do at Frameless

The Frameless experience is structured around four permanent galleries, each with its own identity and specific projection technology. We recommend dedicating at least 90-120 minutes to your visit to fully appreciate each space.

Beyond Reality

The Beyond Reality gallery immerses you in the world of surrealism, where works by Salvador Dalí, René Magritte and Hieronymus Bosch come to life in spectacular fashion. Here, the boundaries between dream and reality dissolve completely.

The Bosch installation is particularly striking: the “Garden of Earthly Delights” animates around you, with fantastical creatures that seem to move in three-dimensional space. The giant insects from Rachel Ruysch’s “Tree Trunk” may initially startle you, but the overall effect is captivating. The gallery’s soundtrack has drawn some criticism for being excessively loud, particularly in the Bosch installations, though it does contribute to an immersive and enveloping atmosphere.

Colour in Motion

This gallery celebrates the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements through works by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Georges Seurat. It’s arguably the most beloved section among visitors for its vibrant colour palette and relaxing atmosphere.

Particularly moving is the installation of Van Gogh’s “Self-Portrait”, where each brushstroke gradually materialises on the walls, allowing you to witness the artist’s creative process. “Almond Blossom” is presented with petals that seem to float gently through space, creating an almost meditative experience.

Works by Monet, including “London, Parliament, Reflections on the Thames” from 1905, are presented with lighting effects that replicate the French master’s famous misty atmospheres. The gallery also features a brilliant interpretation of Canaletto’s works: two paintings of St Mark’s Square have been merged to create a 360-degree immersive installation that positions you at the heart of the Venetian piazza.

The World Around Us

Refreshed in 2024 with five new immersive installations, this gallery explores the relationship between art and nature. Here you’ll find masterpieces such as Hokusai’s “The Great Wave”, one of the most iconic examples of Japanese art, and Joseph Wright of Derby’s “Mount Vesuvius in Eruption”.

Rembrandt’s installation “Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee” (1633) has been animated with particular effect, with waves seeming to crash around you. Thomas Lowinsky’s “The Dawn of Venus” immerses you in the ocean depths with stunning visual effects.

This gallery demonstrates how Frameless extends beyond European art, embracing diverse cultural traditions and offering a truly global panorama of world art.

The Art of Abstraction

The final gallery is dedicated to pioneers of abstract art: Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky and Gustav Klimt. Geometric forms and pure colours dance across screens in sync with jazz rhythms and contemporary music.

It’s the most “modern” gallery conceptually, where art meets music directly. Kandinsky’s compositions, considered among the first forms of pure abstraction, move fluidly, creating hypnotic patterns. Works by Klimt, with their characteristic golden motifs, wrap the space in a kaleidoscopic effect.

This section is particularly appreciated by those seeking a more experimental experience and by those who love the synchronisation between visual and sonic elements.

Blank Canvas Gallery

Beyond the four main galleries, Frameless dedicates space to emerging artists through the Blank Canvas Gallery. This residency programme offers the opportunity to discover the work of contemporary creatives experimenting with immersive digital art.

The gallery periodically changes its installations, so each visit can bring surprises. It’s an initiative that demonstrates Frameless’s commitment to supporting not only the great masters of the past, but also today’s talent.

History and technology

Frameless opened its doors in 2022, positioning itself as London’s first permanent immersive art experience. The ambition was to emulate the success of similar attractions like Borderless in Tokyo, Fabrique des Lumières in Amsterdam and L’Atelier des Lumières in Paris, but with a distinctly British identity.

The project required monumental work in digitalising and animating the artworks. Each masterpiece was studied in minute detail to create animated versions that respected the artist’s original intent, whilst adding elements of movement and three-dimensionality. Synchronisation with the soundtracks was undertaken with particular care, with pieces composed specifically for each installation.

From a technical standpoint, Frameless uses state-of-the-art projectors that guarantee superior visual quality compared to other immersive experiences available in London. Motion sensors integrated into the galleries allow the installation to respond to the presence and movements of visitors, creating a different experience for each person.

Tickets and prices

Ticket prices vary depending on the day and time of your visit.

It’s highly recommended to buy tickets online in advance, especially for weekends and school holidays, when visitor numbers are higher. Advance purchase guarantees entry and often offers discounted rates compared to buying on the day. Children under 3 enter free.

Frameless offers several special ticket types. The Frameless Lates, available Friday and Saturday evenings from 6pm to 10pm (last entry 8pm), are exclusively for those 18 and over and include access to the in-house bar with DJ sets by Soho Radio. These evening tickets start at £20 and offer a more relaxed, adult-oriented atmosphere.

For those seeking a quieter experience, Chilled Sessions are available, created specifically for people who prefer less crowded public spaces. There are also “Multi-Sensory Tots” sessions designed for parents with young children.

Tickets are valid only for the date and time slot selected at purchase and cannot be amended. If you arrive late, staff may not be able to guarantee entry in another time slot.

Opening hours and when to visit

Frameless opening times vary throughout the week. Monday to Thursday, the experience is open from 11am to 6pm, with last entry at 4pm. Friday runs until 10pm, Saturday from 10am to 10pm, and Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

It’s important to note that last entry is always 2 hours before closing. This is because you should allow at least 90-120 minutes for the complete experience to appreciate all four galleries without rushing.

The best time to visit is in the late afternoon on weekdays, when visitor numbers tend to be lower. Weekends and school holidays see significantly more visitors, which can diminish the quality of the experience, especially for those seeking a more contemplative atmosphere.

For those wanting a more intimate, adults-only experience, the Frameless Lates sessions on Friday and Saturday evenings (from 6pm) offer a different vibe, with the opportunity to carry drinks from the galleries and a soundtrack curated by Soho Radio.

Frameless organises monthly Art Talks in collaboration with ArtscapesUK, which explore the artistic movements and works on display. These events are an excellent way to start your visit, allowing you to better appreciate the historical and cultural context of the artworks.
